Jean Michel Basquiat, detto Samo, (Brooklyn, 22 dicembre 1960 – New York, 12 agosto 1988), è stato uno dei dei più grandi - e controversi - artisti di quella "stagione di New York" degli anni Ottanta che ha avuto in Andy Warhol uno dei suoi maggiori e conosciuti esponenti. Artista "di colore" (le sue origini sono sono afroispaniche) ha vissuto una vita breve, intensa e rischiosa. E' morto di overdose nel 1988 a soli 28 anni.

“Da quando avevo diciassette anni, ero certo di diventare celebre. Avevo delle idee romantiche sulla maniera di diventare celebre. Sognavo i miei eroi, Charlie Parker, Jimi Hendrix…”. Eroi entrati a far parte del mito grazie alla loro arte. Ma anche grazie alla patina di disperazione di un’esistenza segnata dalla droga, dalle discriminazioni razziali, da un successo esplosivo e inaspettato, tributato da platee di bianchi. Le stesse platee da cui provenivano le contraddizioni di una società iniqua. Il destino di Jean Michel Basquiat sarebbe stato lo stesso degli eroi che sognava. E che avrebbe ricordato nelle sue opere: Malcom X, Billie Holiday, l’irrequieta frenesia dei protagonisti del be-bop. Stroncato da un’overdose a 28 anni, passato dai graffiti notturni sui muri di Brooklyn e sulle lamiere della subway, alle gallerie d’arte di Manhattan. Le sue opere sono la metà nera della Pop Art americana. Se le ripetizioni di Andy Warhol sono una raffinata fotografia della società consumistica e dell’impermeabilità della nostra sensibilità a quella, i segni e i disegni di Basquiat sono le urla di chi ha vissuto sulla propria pelle l’indifferenza, la discriminazione, l’emarginazione di quella stessa vita a New York. Proprio negli anni in cui tali contraddizioni diventavano sclerotiche e si acuivano: gli anni Ottanta.

Mel Ramos was born in 1935 in Sacramento, California.

Mel Ramos, painter of nudes and Pop rebel from the start, is one of the most important representatives of the California school of this style. His work is still provocative today, as was shown by an exhibition in Hamburg in 1997 with pictures reminiscent of Claudia Schiffer.

Starting in 1963, he developed a predisposition for the common erotic fantasies about women, beginning from female cartoon super-heroes, to dominatrixes and pin-up girls.

With “The Unfinished Paintings” Ramos focused back on the nude in art history, paraphrasing classic masterpieces by Velazquez, Ingres, Modigliani, Manet, and de Kooning’s “Woman” series from the fifties (“I still get a thrill, when I see bill”). In this work the model, looking suggestively out at the audience, is clearly a knowing, complicit sex symbol. Though Ramos is ostensibly commenting on this practice, he is ironically vulnerable to accusations of sexual exploitation. These nudes mimic the suggestive poses and attitudes found in girlie magazines so well as to evoke the same response from an unknowing viewer.

Mel Ramos lives and works in Oakland, California and in Horta de San Juan, Spain. His paintings hang in many important public collections and museums (including the Guggenheim Museum und MOMA in New York, the Museum für moderne Kunst in Vienna, Museum Ludwig in Aachen, and Galerie der Gegenwart in Hamburg).

Egli viene acclamato dalla critica come uno sperimentatore ironico e dissacrante. Il suo tema principale, peraltro comune ad altri esponenti del movimento pop, è la critica al consumismo, utilizzando ed esasperando il linguaggio e la tecnica dei fumetti. Mel Ramos ha ricevuto il suo primo importante riconoscimento nei primi anni ‘60; dal 1959 egli ha partecipato in più di 120 mostre collettive. Insieme ad altri artisti come ad esempio Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg e James Rosenquist, Ramos ha prodotto opere d’arte che celebrano gli aspetti della cultura popolare, come rappresentata dai mass media. Ha partecipato alle principali mostre di Pop Art, sia in Nord America che in Europa e le sue opere sono state riprodotte, spesso spesso per la loro ironia, in libri, cataloghi, periodici.

Mel Ramos è stato criticato molto dalle femministe negli anni ’70 per le sue donnine. Donnine burrose, abbronzate, bionde o brune, sempre nude, abbracciate a pacchetti di sigarette, morbidamente sdraiate, alla mercè degli sguardi, sempre sorridenti. L’aria di queste donnine è salutare, esuberante, ma mai veramente volgare. Sono ovunque, non solo sulle sigarette: bottiglie di Coca, pacchetti di formaggio, come fossero anche loro parte del prodotto. Ma sono belle, fumettistiche, molto Pop. Delle icone. Sono proprio loro a dominare la scena, non più il prodotto. Così è per i super eroi, topics irrinunciabile per ogni maestro della Pop Art. Su tutti, lei, la superdotata Wonder Woman, sogno di generazioni di uomini “comics addicted”. Ma Mel Ramos è anche arte astratta, ad un certo punto comincia a dipingere il paesaggio californiano, la gente. Il Pop si diluisce, ma resta comunque. Anche se non è più quello concentrato, saturo e scoppiettante, così americano, californiano, dei tardi anni ’60 e delle sue Pin-ups.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was one of the most important artists in the Pop art movement in America. Warhol became as famous as many of the celebrities he portrayed in his popular screen prints.

Among his many popular quotes and comments he stated famously that "In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."

Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in 1928 to Slovakian parents. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Warhol studied Commercial Art. He then moved then moved to New York to begin a career in illustration and advertising.

During the 1960s Andy Warhol produced many of his most famous and iconic images. He had now moved into "the Factory", a large building located on Union Square in New York City where him and his team of hired workers were mass producing screen prints of popular culture. Famous works from the period included the Cambells Soup Cans, Coke Bottles, Disaster paintings and pop icon portraits such as Marilyn Monroe. Warhol also started making 16mm films during the 60s with titles like "Chelsea Girls" and "Blow Job".

 

The Factory as he called it was not just the working space for the artist and his workers but was also a meeting place for all kinds of creative and talented people. Artists, musicians, writers and actors frequented the Factory.

Andy Warhol was extensively exhibiting his works in well know art galleries and museums around the world in the 70s and 80s. His celebrity was almost as great as his famous portraits of Mick Jagger, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. 

 

He published "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and back again)", started the "Interview" fashion magazine (still published today), and worked on several television projects including "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" produced for MTV. Warhol also collaborated with several up and coming painters including Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

In 1987 on February 22 Andy Warhol died. After a non-threatening gall bladder operation complications arose and Warhol passed away. His funeral was his final act of celebrity with more than 2000 people attending it. Many celebrities, artists, musicians and influential people attended, with Yoko Ono among those who spoke at his funeral.
